Cannabis CBD Oils 101: The What, How and Why

Smoke it, drink it, rub it, eat it, cannabis comes in many forms and is one of the world’s most versatile plants, and for good reason. The safe consumption and topical use of cannabis has a long list of benefits, and nothing showcases this better than its use as Cannabidiol (CBD) oil. From treating joint pain to helping with focus or relaxation, we here at Sessions sing the praises of CBD oil every day.

If you’re new to the subject of CBD oil, Sessions’ Budtenders are always ready, able and willing to answer any questions you may have, but in the meantime, we’ve prepped a quick primer that takes a closer look at all things CBD oil.

First Things First: What is CBD Oil?

As in, what is CBD? CBD, or cannabidiol, is a type of cannabinoid. Cannabinoid is a type of compound produced by the cannabis plant. There are currently over 100 different cannabinoids, and each have different effects that are harnessed by the cannabis industry for consumer use. For example, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) gets you high, whereas CBD does not.

We repeat: no, CBD will not get you high. Rather, CBD is best known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-psychotic effects. So, if you’ve got joint pain or need a little something to help you relax, CBD is a great option. You will find CBD comes in many forms of cannabis concentrates, including cannabis topicals, cannabis cream, and of course, cannabis oil.

Sessions is happy to offer many of these products, so be sure to check out your local Sessions shop’s product list.

Next Up: How is CBD Oil Made?

How is a plant turned into a consumable oil, you ask? In the cannabis industry, CBD is often extracted from the cannabis plant by a process called CO2 extraction. Without going into too much scientific detail, the process basically entails placing the plant in a chamber that is then filled with carbon dioxide (i.e. CO2). Pressure is then applied to the chamber, which turns the carbon dioxide into a liquid that absorbs the plant’s oils. This liquid is then pumped into another chamber where the carbon dioxide is turned into gas, leaving behind the pure CBD oil. The CBD oil is then mixed with a carrier oil, such as an MCT, or medium-chain triglycerides, a type of saturated fat

You can then either ingest the oil or, depending on the carrier oil used, you can apply it directly to the skin as a topical; though, make sure you always follow the product’s label.

Lastly: Why Use CBD Oil?

CBD oil can be used for pain relief, as a mood booster, a relaxer… need we say more? Studies have shown that CBD can help lessen chronic pain by reducing inflammation – good news if you’re suffering from something like arthritis. Research also shows that there’s promising results in the way CBD interacts with the body’s release of serotonin, the chemical that regulates our mood and general feeling of happiness and well-being. Many are also touting CBD’s possible use as a cancer fighter, but it’s important to note that more studies in humans are needed and there is not yet conclusive research on the topic. No matter what turned you on to the use of CBD oil, always consult with your physician before introducing CBD oil to your daily self-care regimen.
